BEREA —Add Mike Shanahan’s name to the list of prospects to replace Romeo Crennel, a source close to the Browns coaching search said yesterday, one day after the Broncos fired the two-time Super Bowl winner.
Browns owner Randy Lerner has said his new coach doesn’t necessarily need prior head coaching experience in the NFL to get the job, but clearly he would prefer one if the coach has a track record of success.
Lerner’s first interview, albeit an informal one, was Saturday in New York with former Steelers coach (and former Browns player/coach) Bill Cowher. Cowher told Lerner he does not plan on coaching in 2009. Cowher was 161-99-1 in 15 seasons in Pittsburgh.
Lerner was in New York today to interview Eric Mangini, who on Monday was fired as head coach of the New York Jets. Mangini was 23-25 in three seasons.
Shanahan, 56, certainly fits the criteria of a winning, experienced coach with a record of 146-91 plus two Super Bowl wins in 14 years, and now another coaching veteran, Dan Reeves, has thrown his headset into the ring.
Reeves, who last coached in 2003 with the Falcons, told Sirius Radio he would like to get back into coaching. He was 117-79 with the Broncos from 1981-92, 32-34 with the Giants from 1993-96 and 52-61 with the Falcons from 1997 through 13 games of 2003.
Reeves, 64, coached Denver in the three AFC championship games in which the Broncos beat the Browns.
The Broncos, with John Elway at quarterback, lost the Super Bowl each time - 39-20 to the Giants after the 1986 season, 42-10 to the Redskins the next year and 55-10 to the 49ers two years later.
The Falcons went to the Super Bowl under Reeves after the 1998 season and, ironically, were beaten by Elway and the Broncos, 34-19.
"I definitely would be interested in getting back into coaching," Reeves said on Sirius. "I know that sounds crazy when you board a plane in Newark, NJ like I did about 7:30 Monday morning, landed in Atlanta and turned on the radio and three coaches had been fired while I was in the air.
"So why in the world would someone want to get into a business like that? But, you know, it’s in your blood. I can’t get it out."

The Browns, Broncos, Jets and Lions are looking for head coaches. The Raiders are not sure whether to keep Tom Cable as head coach.
"I’ll be coaching again," Shanahan told reporters in Denver. "I can’t give you a time frame. I love the NFL, so I can’t see getting out of it, but you just don’t know."
Shanahan was the Broncos’ general manager as well as their coach, so the G.M. job is open in Cleveland, Detroit, Kansas City and now Denver.
Lerner and team president Mike Keenan met with Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli yesterday separately from their interview with Mangini.
Lerner does not want to rank the coaching candidates, but it is no secret he wants Pioli to run the football operation. Pioli reportedly wants total control, which would make Shanahan an unlikely dance partner. Shanahan would likely accept a coaching job without being general manager, but it would be difficult for him letting someone else pick his 53-man roster.
The Browns should be concerned about Broncos owner Pat Bowlen pursuing Pioli.
A more likely match with Pioli should Lerner convince him to leave the Patriots for the Browns would be Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. The Browns have received permission to interview Schwartz over the weekend while the Titans are on their bye.
Schwartz, 42, was a pro and college scout with the Browns from 1993-95 while Pioli was in the personnel department. He was an assistant coach with the Ravens the next three years. He has been the Titans defensive coordinator since 2001.
Last season Schwartz interviewed for head coaching jobs in Washington, Atlanta and Miami. The Lions plan to interview him Friday or Saturday. Schwartz would be off-limits for interviews starting Monday until the Titans win the Super Bowl or are knocked out of the playoffs.
The Browns have an interview scheduled with Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. The Giants have a bye this weekend.
Lerner and Keenan also plan to interview Falcons president Rich McKay either today or tomorrow.
