Bear Report's Blitzing Bear Blog always keeps you in the loop each and every day of the week with all the very latest news, notes & quotes surrounding the Monsters of the Midway. From hirings to firings and roster moves to the police blotter, the BBB is the place to be for your Chicago Bears.
ESPN's Todd McShay does a great job covering college football and the NFL Draft, but it's safe to say that the baby-faced analyst doesn't know the ins and outs of the Chicago Bears organization.
Now that the official draft order has been released, all except the 31st and 32nd picks since they will be decided by the winner of Super Bowl XLIII, McShay has the Bears taking USC quarterback Mark Sanchez with their selection at No. 18 overall. While general manager Jerry Angelo emphatically told the media at his season-ending press conference that he wants competition for Kyle Orton going into training camp in 2009, don't expect that competition to be in the form of the team's first-rounder. Angelo is still bitter from swinging and missing on Rex Grossman in Round 1 of the 2003 draft, and since he'll want his new signal caller to challenge Orton for the starting job right away, he's much more likely to go the free-agency route.

New England's Matt Cassel is considered the prize of this year's free-agent class at QB, although it makes more sense for a below-the-radar veteran like Byron Leftwich of the Steelers or David Carr of the Giants to be on Angelo's wish list.
A more suitable choice for the Midway Monsters is the player McShay has being taken by Tampa Bay one slot later at 19th: Missouri wide receiver Jeremy Maclin. Aside from converted corner Devin Hester and 2008 third-rounder Earl Bennett, no wideout from last year's team is assured of being back in the Windy City. The Bears are in desperate need of a legitimate No. 1 target in the passing game, and Maclin has the tools to be a star on Sunday.
Another prospect that would be a good fit is Texas defensive end Brian Orakpo, who McShay has going to Baltimore at No. 27, as the Bears could sorely use an impact pass rusher off the edge.

RB Adrian Peterson averaged 5.0 yards on 20 carries in his usual backup role, but it was the third time in his seven-year career that Peterson had averaged at least 5.0 yards for a season. ...
WR Rashied Davis had career highs in catches (35) and yards (445), but he does not figure to be a starter again next season when the Bears look to upgrade their receiver group. ...
TE Desmond Clark caught 41 passes, his third straight season with more than 40, but his 367 yards represented a major drop-off from last season, when he had 545 yards, and 2006, when he had a career-best 626. ...
S Kevin Payne led the Bears with four interceptions and 147 interception-return yards and was second on the team with 129 tackles, according to coaches' review of film. ...
P Brad Maynard finished with an NFL-best 40 punts inside the 20, the second-highest single-season total since the stat was first kept in 1976.
S Mike Brown is still a good player and a great leader and locker room presence, but he's been hurt in each of the past five seasons, although he played 15 games this year. The Bears won't gamble too much money on his health. ...
Consider QB Rex Grossman gone. Next year the Bears will go with Kyle Orton or a proven veteran, if they can afford to bring one in and he beats out Orton. ...
WR Brandon Lloyd did what he usually does, flash some ability to make great catches for a short while and then disappear. He missed six weeks with a sprained knee and then was no factor for six weeks after that. ...
LT John St. Clair did a commendable job as a season-long, fill-in starter after first-round pick Chris Williams, who was slated for the job, had back surgery. St. Clair is not considered the long-range answer as a starter, but the Bears would love to have him back if they could get him for backup money because of his versatility. ...
LB Darrell McClover is a valuable special-teams cover guy. ...
RB Kevin Jones was not even an afterthought this season, but if he makes more strides following his 2007 knee surgery, he might be a serviceable backup on a team with little depth behind workhorse Matt Forte. ...
S Brandon McGowan has been hurt more than healthy and is probably a longshot to be back, but he didn't play badly when he was in the lineup, especially down in the box.
