This season didn’t live up to expectations with respect to a playoff berth, but in 2008 there were several team and individual player records broken. With special thanks to team statistician Mike Haim, here are some of the more notable record-breaking accomplishments from the 2008 season.
Team records set
Fewest penalties, 16-game season: 71 (old record: 78 in 2007)
Fewest penalty yards, 16-game season: 538 (old record: 629 in 2006)
Highest pass completion percentage, season: 64.51% (309-479)
(old record: 64.34% in 1991 (332-516))
Highest punt return average, season: 15.47 (30-464)
(old record: 15.35 (31-476) in 2007)
Individual player records set
Most consecutive passes completed: 16 Trent Edwards, 9/7 vs. Seattle (6) – 9/14 at Jacksonville (10)
(old record: 15, Jim Kelly, 12/23/89 at N.Y. Jets (1) – 9/9/90 vs. Indianapolis (14)
Highest pass completion percentage, career: 61.59% Trent Edwards (396-643)
(old record: 60.48%, Rob Johnson, 1998-2001 (401-663))
Highest pass completion percentage, game: 83.33% Trent Edwards (25-30), 10/19 vs. San Diego
(old record: 82.86%, Jim Kelly (29-35), 11/24/94 at Detroit)
Most consecutive PATs made: 186 Rian Lindell, 9/7/03 vs. New England – 12/21/08 at Denver
(old record: 172, Steve Christie, 11/26/95 vs. New England - 12/23/00 at Seattle)
Most punt return yards, career: 1,312 Roscoe Parrish, 2005-08 (old record: 1,045, Jeff Burris, 1994-97)
Most punt return yards, game: 120 Roscoe Parrish, 9/7 vs. Seattle (old record: 104, Roscoe Parrish, 11/26/06 vs. Jacksonville)
Most kickoff return yards, season: 1,468 Leodis McKelvin (old record: 1,391, Terrence McGee, 2005)
Most kickoff return yards, rookie or first-year player, season: 1,468 Leodis McKelvin (old record: 1,205, Eric Moulds, 1996)
Most kickoff return yards, rookie or first-year player, game: 185 Leodis McKelvin, 11/17 vs. Cleveland
(old record: 179, Leodis McKelvin, 11/2/08 vs. N.Y. Jets)
(record before 2008: 176, Roscoe Parrish, 11/20/05 at San Diego)
