Ronald Belisario, the troubled Los Angeles Dodgers reliever who missed all of last season because of visa problems in his native Venezuela, said Wednesday that it was a positive test for cocaine that kept him from obtaining the necessary paperwork that would have allowed him to enter the United States.

There's no kidding around about this - goats develop accents, a United Kingdom study suggests.

Scientists previously believed that the calls of goats, which have limited vocal abilities, were determined by genetics. Instead, this research found that kids -young goats - adapt their calls to their social group.

Elodie Briefer and Alan McElligott from the Queen Mary University of London recorded and analyzed the calls 23 young goats on a U.K. farm.

They found that kids that were full siblings had more similar calls at a young age, but as they got older, their calls became more like the calls of other goats in their social groups
Martinez, whose health had been declining due to complications from diabetes, was seeking a kidney transplant. He had been a mentor to many football players in the Bay Area.

Dutch scientists have used stem cells to create strips of muscle tissue with the aim of producing the first lab-grown hamburger later this year.

The aim of the research is to develop a more efficient way of producing meat than rearing animals.

At a major science meeting in Canada, Prof Mark Post said synthetic meat could reduce the environmental footprint of meat by up to 60%.

"We would gain a tremendous amount in terms of resources," he said.

Professor Post's group at Maastricht University in the Netherlands has grown small pieces of muscle about 2cm long, 1cm wide and about a mm thick.

They are off-white and resemble strips of calamari in appearance. These strips will be mixed with blood and artificially grown fat to produce a hamburger by the autumn.

Living plants have been generated from the fruit of a little arctic flower, the narrow-leafed campion, that died 32,000 years ago, a team of Russian scientists reports. The fruit was stored by an arctic ground squirrel in its burrow on the tundra of northeastern Siberia and lay permanently frozen until excavated by scientists a few years ago.

his would be the oldest plant by far that has ever been grown from ancient tissue. The present record is held by a date palm grown from a seed some 2,000 years old that was recovered from the ancient fortress of Masada in Israel.

Seeds and certain cells can last a long term under the right conditions, but many claims of extreme longevity have failed on closer examination, and biologists are likely to greet this claim, too, with reserve until it can be independently confirmed. Tales of wheat grown from seeds in the tombs of the pharaohs have long been discredited. Lupines were germinated from seeds in a 10,000-year-old lemming burrow found by a gold miner in the Yukon. But the seeds, later dated by the radiocarbon method, turned out to be modern contaminants.
his would be the oldest plant by far that has ever been grown from ancient tissue.

Palaeontologists working in the United Arab Emirates have uncovered elephant footprints that are seven million years old, making them the oldest of their kind and possibly the longest preserved trackway in the world.

The find, reported on Wednesday in the British journal Biology Letters, was made at a site called Mleisa 1, in the UAE's Baynunah Formation, a geological outcrop dated to the Late Miocene.

The footprints came from a herd of at least 13 elephants, ranging from adults to a young calf, as they walked through mud.

The traces hardened, became buried and seven million years later became exposed once more through erosion. They are the oldest fossil evidence of an elephant herd.

A larger imprint, distant from the others in the herd, is believed to be that of a male.
The former top executive of the Fiesta Bowl has reached a plea deal with Arizona prosecutors to settle allegations related to a political donations scandal.
Junker's lawyer, Stephen Dichter, said in a statement that his client plans to plead guilty to a single felony count in state court and another in federal court related to his role in soliciting political contributions from Fiesta Bowl employees who were later reimbursed by the bowl.
