Four concussion lawsuits combined
At least four lawsuits blaming the NFL for concussion-related dementia and brain disease will be consolidated in Philadelphia, and more could follow.
A U.S. judicial panel approved requests Tuesday by the NFL and plaintiffs lawyers to try similar cases before Senior U.S. District Judge Anita B. Brody in Philadelphia. The lawsuits represent more than 300 retired players or spouses, including two-time Super Bowl champion Jim McMahon. "(This) allows Judge Brody to now bring everybody together and put this in an organized environment where all the legal issues and the medical issues and the scientific issues can all be decided in one place," said lawyer Larry Coben of Philadelphia, who filed the first lawsuit in August on behalf of McMahon and six others. The players accuse the NFL of negligence and intentional misconduct in its response to the headaches, dizziness and dementia that former players have reported. Some say they have no symptoms but want to be monitored for future health problems. Read more: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/752399...iladelphia

RE: Four concussion lawsuits combined
I'm sorry but no.
This is as bad as those Mcdonald's lawsuits. Where the lady sued for the coffee that spilled in her lap and burned her WHILE she was driving with it in her lap. And the one where the people said Mcdonald's made them fat. The NFL shouldn't be held responsible for THEIR own stupidity. Football is a contact sport. A BRUTAL contact sport. Each and every player KNOWS the risk. Yet, they still played. They know this game normally comes with health issues, and again, yet they still played. If I were the NFL, I'd counter-suit them for being stupid and negligent.

RE: Four concussion lawsuits combined
I think that a player has a right to use if the team did not respond properly to their injury. For instance, if they were allowed or forced to play when they were obviously still injured from their concussion. But I do not know if they should sue if they simply were injured with a concussion but were well cared for and not released to play again until they were well healed. As said, it is a contact sport and players know they can be injured in this way.

But if some player wants to sit there and act like a tough man and ALLOW HIMSELF to keep playing, that is nobody's fault but his own. These are grown men, not children. If they can't take responsibility for their own stupidity then that's THEIR problem, not the league's. If they want to be dumb enough to keep playing DESPITE physicians telling them not to, then it's THEIR problem, not the physicians or league.

If players listened to their coaches and learned fundamental tackling skills (i.e. not leading with the helmet) this wouldn't be a problem. Also, as soon as the NFL felt it was an issue they quickly became the forefront to the field of research. A move to save face? Possibly; but I'm not really seeing it. |
